We wandered into a restaurant that had a sleek black crow in a cage twenty feet away from our table. Artie carried a single tortilla chip at a time over to the crow. Pretty soon, the charmed crow was cawing to get him to come back, give him another chip. Just like Artie’s women. Art began cawing, too, loud, saying, “I’m Arturo Cuervo, “CAW!” That afternoon I learned to caw, too.

“We should move down here, Simone, and get a house, big enough for the children.”

That evening we went to the Giggling Marlin bar, with Steve. “Americans can’t handle money here,” Steve explained. “You have to marry a Mexican to have your own business.”

“You can marry a Mexican deaf-mute, Simone,” Art joked. “Then we’ll start our own empire!”
